Investigators and emergency personnel on Tuesday morning worked at the site where one Metro subway train slammed into another on Monday afternoon. The crash occurred on the outskirts of the city. At least nine people died and at least 75 were injured, emergency officials said.
Officials said workers were combing through the wreckage, searching for additional victims and indications as to what could have caused the crash.
In the accident, one train on the system’s heavily used Red Line rear-ended a stopped train at considerable speed about 5 p.m. between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations, leaving the rear train atop the forward train in a mangled cluster of metal and glass during the evening rush hour.
Emergency workers removed an unidentified person from the site of the crash Monday. Several passengers were carried off on stretchers, and emergency medical personnel set up a triage site nearby.
Rescue crews used ladders and heavy equipment to cut into the wreckage and get to passengers stuck inside. Emergency workers removed a body from the wreckage.
Numerous people walked away from the crash site wearing bandages, slings and in at least one case, a neck brace.
The general manager of the Metro system, John B. Catoe Jr., on Monday said one train had stopped near a platform and was waiting for permission to proceed when it was hit from behind by the second train.
"It looks to be the worst Metro accident in D.C. history," said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, left, with Dennis Rubin, the fire chief, after the crash. "We're going to investigate this and find out what happened."
