Babbitt是书中人名成为普通名词。源出辛克莱•刘易斯（Sinclair Lewis）1922年的小说Babbitt(《巴比特》)，书中主人公即此类型人物。作者描写他说：His name is Babbitt, and …he was nimble in the calling of selling houses for more than people could afford to pay. (他姓巴比特，名乔治，干的是房地产生意，擅长把高价的房子卖给负担不起的人家。) 他是个joiner, 本地各种社团都有他的份儿，他也是个booster, 一味自夸他这个城是全世界最好的地方。
